Should I be worried about shingle rocks in my gutters? I assume some might not be a big deal… but the amount has me worried. Just for reference: it was about a ½” of thick, compacted build up.

Shelby, I’m glad you reached out when you did! I truly appreciate a homeowner that keeps track of their roof health. 

Smart homeowners know that spotting roof damage early can be the difference between replacing a few shingles…and replacing your entire roof. While I’m not out there myself to take a look at what your roof looks like- I can offer you a little insight into what’s happening.

Good news: Granule build-up in gutters is such a common occurrence it even has its own nickname. We call it “fall-off”. 

But how do you gauge when fall off is normal… and when it’s a problem? 

In order to answer that question, let’s first take a look at how asphalt shingles work to protect your home.

Asphalt Shingles: America’s Top Choice Since 1903

When Henry Reynolds first cut asphalt rolls to install on roofs, he probably didn’t realize he was reinventing the way we protect our homes. 

Since then, asphalt roofs have become the most popular roofing style in America. Today, 80% of residential builds have asphalt roofs. 

All asphalt shingles are made from a base of either felt or fiberglass with asphalt granules attached to the mats. The granules create a layer of protection and a shield from the weather. 

It may sound funny, but our roofing supplier, GAF takes pride in their asphalt granules specifically- and for good reason. Their asphalt granules utilize a layer lock technology for extra longevity and protection. GAF knows fall-off happens regularly, so they layer granules in such a way to account for it. Even more, their shingles release algae fighting copper as the granules fall-off. It’s the best coverage available to homeowners. 

Losing some of these granules is normal but the age of your roof is the biggest factor in determining if there’s a problem. 

Strange but true: New asphalt shingle roofs see the most fall-off. 

It’s a sign your roof is working correctly! The granules loosen during installation, and rinse off during rain. Shingles- especially good quality shingles- are designed with heavy layers of granules so they don’t get damaged while the roofing crew is laying them.  

An asphalt roof has a lifespan as high as 30 years. If your roof is getting closer to the end of its life expectancy and you’re seeing lots of fall-off? It’s time to consider replacement.

Unfortunately, age may not be the only reason you’re seeing fall-off. 

If your roof’s only middle aged? It’s time to check for water damage. 

Water Damage- Your Roof’s Greatest Threat

On average, water damage accounts for 29% of all homeowner insurance claims each year. 

If you’re lucky, you can catch the damage while it’s still contained to your home’s exterior. If you’ve noticed water in your attic, no need to examine the outside…you know you have a leak!

Shelby, since you noticed this early on, odds are the issue isn’t exponential. This is one of the reasons we urge homeowners to perform regular maintenance checks. Catching water damage early can save you thousands in repairs!

However, I’d recommend examining the top of your roof anyway. Grab a ladder and look for:

• Stained or discolored shingles 
• Bald spots from missing granules
• Cracks and blisters

If you don’t see anything like these issues and your roof is <5 years old, you don’t need to worry.

3. Gifts are saved for Christmas! No exceptions. 

At our house, Trina and Michael want to open presents faster than I can wrap them! But I’m in category “C”- all gifts wait under the tree until Christmas morning. 

The Christmases we spent celebrating while serving in Kenya weren’t as lavish as the states. Instead, we were grateful for time together celebrating our savior’s birth. I see gifts as an extension of that celebration and it’s why we wait to open our presents until Christmas morning. 

Besides, I love when everything comes together all at once. 

Sometimes waiting is better. And once the winter weather hits? Waiting might be something you should do, too, if you’re ready for a new asphalt roof. 

This may surprise you but we don’t schedule many asphalt roof installations in the winter. Why? Well, cold temperatures put our installation’s integrity- and our crew!- at risk. 

In this article, we’re going to talk about why you shouldn’t install an asphalt shingle roof in the coldest season of Pennsylvania.

Reasons Why Not To Install Your Roof In The Winter

Have you made gingerbread houses yet this year? Every year we do our best at cookie construction, thank goodness I have Vern on our “home construction crew”.

Count on Vern to build a solid gingerbread house. First, he warms the icing to the perfect temperature and density. If the thick layer of icing isn’t the right consistency and temperature, it just won’t hold. 

Although there’s a huge difference between gingerbread and real houses- in both applications adhesive makes a BIG difference!

Like gingerbread, asphalt shingles also need good sealant to protect your home for the long haul. This is why temperature matters so much! 

Your asphalt roof’s sealant is activated by heat and sunlight. When installed on cold days, it’s slow to activate. Improper adhesion leaves space for water and pests, both unwelcome “presents” on Christmas!

A slow curing sealant isn’t the only way a cold installation can fail your home. We also run into problems like: 

• Brittle and cold shingles are difficult to cut
• Cold air affects the nail gun pressure- making installation unreliable
• Edges of your shingles can curl up in the cold during a winter install 

The ideal temperature for an asphalt roof installation is above 40° F. Anything below this will affect the way your roof functions.

As a homeowner, we want you to have the maximum protection on every roof you have us install. We aren’t willing to risk voiding your warranty on a hasty and chilly project.

You’d be surprised how fast frostbite can set in. The National Weather Service shows some alarming statistics here. 

Ice also increases the likelihood of injuries from falls. In 2014, construction work related fatalities saw a 6% increase. The rise is attributed to slips and falls. 

Vern and I never want Martin to be the reason a family member doesn’t come home for Christmas. We want the best for our crew and the best for your home.

Cody, congratulations on the bonus and the decision to make a home move. Placing your home on the market is a big decision. I’m glad to hear you’re thinking ahead about how to get the most from your investment. 

Often, homeowners start with interior changes. They renovate the master bathroom or finish the basement. But whenever I’m asked this I recommend focusing on your exterior first to boost your curb appeal and take care of the “big” things the next homeowner doesn’t want to think about.

We need a new roof bad…but deciding between different quotes has been a real headache. It’s just asphalt shingle. We received one roofing quote for $8,250 and another for $17,450. That’s a HUGE DIFFERENCE.

How am I supposed to know whether the larger roof quote is worth it? Or if the cheap quote is something I’ll regret? Any advice on what to look for?

A new roof installation is an important job. Not to put any pressure on you but…choosing the right bid is one of the biggest decisions a homeowner can make. 

You want a reliable contractor- someone who’s on time and protects your home by installing the material right the first time. But does that always mean you have to choose the most expensive quote to get a trustworthy contractor?

Before getting started, ask yourself what you expect out of your roofing contractor. 

Do you want someone who: 

• • Handles permits 
  • Prioritizes cleanliness
  • Has experience working with your roof material

When something goes wrong with a roof install, it’s a big deal. Roofs are more than cosmetic, they protect your biggest asset. So while materials are important, it’s also good to think about your expectations for installation.

My advice? Prioritize what you expect from the job and let the services provided dictate your decision. 

You’ve done your due diligence by rounding up multiple roofing quotes. So you know the range of price for the installation you’re looking for. In your message you only mention two (and you may have gotten more), but for the sake of conversation- let’s start at the basics here and talk about “The Rule of Three”.

The Rule of Three 

A common “trick” to choosing a contractor is to receive three quotes and go with the cheapest. 

This is widely accepted as the best method but there’s flaws to the theory. Ever heard the expression “You Get What You Pay For?” If you’re paying for the cheapest installation, you’re taking a risk on the outcome. 

Low quotes mean: 

• • Additional ‘surprise’ expenses during the installation
  • Contractors who cut corners by layering shingles, not installing underlayment, and not checking attic ventilation
  • Costly repairs down the road when a roof fails before its time- and wasn’t installed to fit warranty coverage. 

Yes, you absolutely should get multiple quotes on a project as big as installing a new asphalt shingle roof. But take your time and vet the best choice! If your roof is actively leaking, you might feel pressured to take the first quote you get (or go with the contractor who can get you on the schedule the fastest).

Here’s a great way to look at it: 

A skilled team can replace your asphalt roof in a couple of days. 

That means you can take the extra time to focus on finding a contractor that fits your needs. When install starts it goes fast. Smart consumers know that doing a little groundwork is worth the extra day or two before accepting a quote. 

What should you check when choosing a contractor?

First, Check the Reviews

The internet is a great place to start.

Look up each company you’ve received a quote from. What are the reviews?

Look up your top roofing quote contractors on Better Business Review or check Google. People are honest and critical of any job. If one of your top contractors has less than stellar reviews, or doesn’t have any reviews, that’s a sign to think twice. 

If you already know what product you want installed, you can find a great contractor through the manufacturer, too. Choosing well-made American materials means your roof will keep your home protected for 25+ years when installed correctly.

Ryan, don’t go with the cheapest roofing quote but don’t automatically jump into the most expensive one either. 

• • Have a discussion with your contractors (if they won’t take time to answer your questions straight and honest- that’s a big red flag). 
  • Read through your bid and ask for clarification on installation process, projected install time, and material availability.
  • Ask about warranties and guarantees.
  • Ask about what happens if the installer discovers something unexpected while replacing your roof.
  • See if ventilation is included. 
  • Choose a local company (instead of out-of-state) that can be held accountable for any unexpected issues. 

Ultimately, go with your gut. It’s best to choose a roofing quote from a company that values the same things you do.

Vincent Van Gogh relied heavily on yellows and oranges in his artwork, and utilized a regular color theme in his works. 

Claude Monet never used the color black in his paintings. This was common with many of the impressionists, as they believed that a change in hue was richer than a change in shade.

Frida Kahlo painted in bright and vivid colors. She associated an emotion and sensation to each color. Blue is the color of tenderness, and yellow of madness and mystery. 

You may never pick up a canvas and a paintbrush, but where you live? It’s a work of art! We call it “curb appeal”, but the end result is the same: every step of the process is charted out and planned in order to create a beautiful masterpiece you live in and love every day. 

That’s a pretty romantic thought, isn’t it? And maybe NOT what you were expecting when you decided to read this article on choosing your new roof’s color. Yet there’s a reason so many of our clients struggle with making the commitment to a new roof.

I want to make it easier for you by giving you a little industry insight to help out. Today we’ll be covering the most important factors to consider when choosing a color for your asphalt shingle roof.

How To Choose The Best Color Roof for Your Climate

You’ve heard it before: 

Location, location, location. 

It’s true in property value, livability, and in choosing the right color for your new roof!

Believe it or not, your roof’s location plays a pivotal role in choosing the right color for your home. Why?

Different colored roofs are better for different climates. And although it’s crazy to think that something as small as a roof’s color can affect your home, it’s true! 

When discussing attic ventilation, we talked about the dangers of a hot attic for your roof. In most cases, an unventilated attic damages your roof- even causing the shingles to melt. 

In the same way that your attic temperature can hurt your roof, your roof temperature can affect your attic. 

The darker the roof, the hotter the attic. 

Because light reflects heat, lighter roofs are able to deflect light away from your home. On the opposite spectrum, darker colors absorb heat, leading to warmer attic temperatures. 

According to the Department of Energy, attic temperatures in the summer can vary by 50 degrees when installing a darker roof. 

And while this might sound like a cautionary tale against dark colored roofs, that’s not the case! We love the look of a dark colored roof, and choosing a dark color isn’t necessarily a bad thing for your home.

The key is to plan the right color based on your location and climate. 

In climates with freezing winters, a dark colored roof is your best friend. Colder areas experience different types of roof damage than warmer. Instead of melting shingles, homeowners have to watch out for ice dams. 

Here in Schuylkill County, the most popular roof color is dark grey. Our harsh Pennsylvania winters are a bigger cause for concern than our humid summers, so a dark grey is a good choice for our area of the USA. When the right color is paired with proper attic ventilation and durable materials, you’re promised a roof designed to last for years to come. 

Historic Roof Colors vs The Modern Roof Selection 

When asphalt shingles first became popular they were only offered in greys and dark tones.

Now, there’s hundreds of different colors to choose from! 

But when it comes to roofing on an older home, limiting your options might help narrow down your decision. 

Materials have changed to fit every style of home, regardless of age. But in an area where we have so many beautiful historic homes? You can’t go wrong with a classic. 

Take this historic home, for example: 

The dark grey roof compliments the lighter siding. The two pair together to create excellent curb appeal and offer a historic look without compromising quality. 

Or look at the roof on this Queen Anne style home: 

The grey roof doesn’t take away from the original design. Instead, it allows the architectural design of the porch and tower to take center stage, complimenting the beautiful brick facade. 

What if you have a modern home? You’re in luck! Don’t be afraid to branch out, there are so many gorgeous colors to choose from. 

Aged cooper was named as the roofing color of the year for 2021, and we’re in love with it!

The warm color creates a cottage-like appearance and pairs beautifully with nearly any facade. 

The Rule of Three in Home Exterior Design

While we’re on the subject of siding, pro tip: match your roof to your existing exterior. Home designers recommend choosing three colors for your home’s exterior. It’s important to choose colors that complement and work well with each other. 

When talking about choosing vinyl siding colors in the past, we looked at the color wheel. Let’s have a quick refresher on how that works. 

Using the Color Wheel 

The color of your siding is arguably the most important thing to consider when choosing a color for your new roof. 

When it comes to choosing a color, there are two themes to follow: 

• Complementary 
• Analogous

First, let’s look at complementary colors. 

Complimentary colors are two colors on opposite sides of the color wheel. Complementary colors contrast each other, but work well despite that. 

Let’s look at teal, for example. A complementary color to that is a burnt red. Here’s what that looks like on a house: 

But complementary colors aren’t the only way to go. Analogous colors are another great style option. 

Analogous are colors right next to each other on the color wheel. 

Let’s use the same teal as before, but now paired with an analogous color, like dark blue.

Although both houses use the same teal color, the difference between the complementary and  analogous color is amazing! 

And this same rule applies to every siding and roof choice, not just bright colors. Take this home for example:

The analogous cream color matched with grey overtones blend perfectly together. There’s no contrast, but the house still has character and great curb appeal. 

And look at this home with complementary colors: 

The brown and purple are a stellar pairing. The light brown offers a cool backdrop, and the dark purple serves as a subtle color pop.

And when it comes to installing a new roof, saving time is top of mind for both homeowners and contractors. 

After all, who wants the sound of a nail gun echoing off their roof for any longer than they need to? And for contractors, installing a new roof quickly means reducing the risk unpredictable weather might pose. 

This commitment to timeliness has benefited the construction world in many ways. 

Before the invention of asphalt shingles, composite shingles were all the rage. These shingles were made of felted fabric covered in tar and their installation process took 3-5x what it takes for a modern roof. 

In response, the first asphalt shingles were designed.

“Time” is a big motivation for innovation in the construction industry.  

When vinyl siding was first invented, it was advertised as cheaper and easier to install than aluminum siding. 

The invention of gutter guards saves homeowners time on exterior home maintenance. 

The truth is everyone loves saving time, and there’s nothing wrong with that! 

But at what point does ‘saving time’ become cutting corners? 

Let’s talk about that today with this question:

Can you skip the tear off on your new roof…and just lay new shingles over old shingles?

What Happens When You Layer Asphalt Shingles 

This installation “trick” is exactly what it sounds like. Instead of removing the pre-existing shingles, a second new layer is installed on top. 

Some contractors view this as an impressive show of workmanship. They will tell you that lining up shingles over shingles is a difficult job, and blending the two into one roof while making it look good isn’t easy.

But professional contractors- our team included- refuse to layer shingles. Removing shingles can be a hard and tiring job, but the risks of layering outweigh the time saved. In the end, it’s more important to us that we leave a jobsite knowing we can stand by the warranty we offer. 

Still, while you’ve collected bids for your new roof, you may have run into this option. So let’s take a closer look at the “pros” and cons of layering shingles. 

The Case For Multiple Layers

Tearing off shingles seems like an extra step to some homeowners. And we get it- when your home is without a roof? The less time spent on replacing it, the better. You want protection, and you need it fast!

Not to mention you’ll be saving money during the initial installation. By skipping this step, you’re cutting back on labor costs on the extra day of tear down. 

Installing shingles over shingles can save you money in the short term. 

But how much time are you really saving? At most, it takes 3 days to remove old asphalt shingles. Our crew can take care of 95% of our clients’ tear off in less than a day. That’s it!

You might be thinking:

 “Well, layering shingles is less invasive than tearing everything off. I don’t want a crew hanging around my house for a week…”

If the only argument in favor of layering shingles is saving a little time, what’s the argument against it? 

We Won’t Install Shingles Over Shingles. Here’s Why:

Two roofs aren’t better than one. 

You’d never install one roof over another but when you layer shingles, you’re doing exactly that! 

And this double roof installation causes many problems.

The biggest? The way your double-layered roof traps heat.  

When installing shingles over pre-existing shingles, you’re creating extra insulation.

We recently covered attic ventilation and the importance of keeping your roof cool. Here’s a quick refresh: 

Summer heat is one of the most dangerous risks for your roof. When improperly ventilated, that heat begins to melt away and destroy your shingles. Overtime as the shingles contract and change shape, damaged areas leave room for water to get in. 

When you stack shingles, you’re not allowing your roof to have proper air flow. In return, you’re overheating both your home and your roof. 

This imbalance costs you in two ways: 

1. Trapped heat causes both sets of shingles to decompose, meaning you’ll need to replace your roof a lot sooner! Average asphalt shingles can last as long as 20 years, but when layered, that number can drop by 40%.
2. Improper air flow affects your energy bill. Layered shingle roofs constrict air flow, which can increase your energy bill by up to 20%. 

The truth is, you’re not saving time or money in the long run. By layering shingles, you’re setting your roof up for failure. 

These aren’t the only downsides to layered shingles. Other problems include: 

• • Extra weight on your roof can damage your home’s structure.
  • Algae and bacteria become trapped and can continue to grow on the original shingles.
  • Reduced home value.

Layered shingles might seem like a great idea in the short term. But the negative effects of this installation style continues to outweigh the “benefits.” 

The Best Roof for Curb Appeal

Did you know that installing a new roof has a return on investment as high as 68%? 

In fact, installing a new roof is one of the best things you can do when putting your house on the market. 

However, that same statistic doesn’t carry over to roofs with multiple layers. 

When a homebuyer starts the process of buying a home, the home insurance company inquires about the quality of the roof. The two biggest concerns are 

• • the age of the roof, 

• • and how many layers it has. 

Almost every insurance company will only insure the top layer of the home’s roof. What does that mean for the homeowner? 

If a storm hits and the roof is damaged, insurance will only cover a new top layer of shingles. You’ll have to cover damage expenses to both the original layer of shingles and the roof’s sheathing. 

For this reason, roofs with multiple layers of shingles are passed over by potential buyers.

Not planning on selling your home? Curb appeal still matters.

We live in a house with the same asphalt roof since it’s construction in the 70’s. We’ve noticed rot in the shingles and the padding has worn down. During heavy rain, water’s started leaking into our attic. 

It’s definitely time for a new roof. The sooner we can get started on it, the better.

With little ones of our own running around, I understand the concern. You don’t want to disrupt their school days, but it also sounds like your roof is in bad shape.

If you have water coming into your attic, you need to act fast. Water damage spreads quickly. With every storm that comes through, you’re opening your home to the risk of expensive — and intrusive — repairs.

The good news is replacing a roof doesn’t take long, and isn’t an intrusive project.

A Quick Installation

Shannon, you mentioned that your kids are doing school from home. You’re right- roofing replacement is a loud job. If you have a single story home, that means you’re going to hear our crew walking, moving materials, and using tools no matter where you are in your house.

If you have a multi-story home and a finished basement, your kids might be able to study from home without distraction. But, sometimes the excitement of having something “new” happening at home is distraction even with noise control. If you want your kids to have the best for study time, it’s a good idea to take them to a friend or family member’s home for the day.

The same with pets. It’s a good idea to keep them out of the home too. If your dog is stressed by thunderstorms- the sound of people walking on your roof is also going to cause anxiety.

Important: If you do decide to keep pets at home during your roof replacement- they need to be kenneled or locked in a secure area before our crew arrives. Our crew moves fast, and we can’t be responsible for furry loved-ones getting out during the excitement.

But here’s the good news: an average asphalt shingle roof replacement only takes a couple days.

How To Choose the Fastest Roof Replacement

There are a few factors that affect construction time:

1. What type of roof is being installed?  Our expert crew can install asphalt and metal roofs fast. On the other hand, slate and wooden roofs can take closer to a week to install. (Need help choosing your roofing materials? Check out our ultimate roofing guide!)
2. What’s the weather forecast? The best time to install a roof is when it’s over 40 degrees outside. Yes, you can install a roof when it’s cold out, but it takes more time for prep and installation. The good news? With the weather in the 50’s and 60’s this week, it’s the perfect time to replace your roof!
3. How big is your house? The larger the roof, the more time it can take to replace it. The average roof is about 1,700 square feet. If your roof is much larger, it may take a few more days to get the job done.

So, no more worrying about having to stay in a hotel for a week. By booking your roof replacement before it becomes a major repair, you’ll only need to adjust your schedule 2-3 days. And, let’s face it, the change of scenery might even be a nice treat from being cooped up this winter!

Prepping Your Home… and Yard

However, there are a few steps you can take to guarantee your interior is ready for the project:

• Move valuables out of your attic and cover other belongings in plastic sheets.
• Take down any fragile decorations from your walls
• And, if you do use your attic for storage be prepared for a little dust!

This is important: Before our crew arrives, you MUST clear your yard. 

If your yard is like ours, everytime the snow melts it leaves behind some debris. Branches, rocks, toys, trash….all of this can make replacing a roof more difficult for our crew. Plus, it’s important to us to leave our worksites clean.

By cleaning up and cutting the grass before construction, we can make sure we don’t leave any potential hazards in your yard while we’re on the job.

One of my residential rentals needs a new roof. Right now, we’ve got asphalt shingles…but I’ve read that metal has more durability. 

Still, I’ve always thought of metal as a commercial roof, not for housing. What are your thoughts on replacing asphalt shingles with metal? Pros/Cons?

Great question.

Did you know that outside of North America, most countries don’t use asphalt shingles? Even for residential applications?

Why?

A couple of reasons- but you hit on the big one in your question: Durability.

Asphalt roofing is made by gluing asphalt with adhesive to a base mat. With time, weather causes the adhesive to weaken and leads to deterioration. This causes a host of problems, such as algae grown, shingle roll, and the general instability that leads to a need for repair and replacement.

Even with good maintenance, asphalt shingles generally have a 20 year lifespan.

Compare that to metal- which needs much less attention and has a lifespan of up to 60 years.

By switching to a metal roof, you cut out the big issues of material decay or algae growth. And that 40 years of extra wear makes a BIG difference to your property’s value. Thinking of selling your rentals in the future? Metal roofing can increase your property value by up to 6%.

Is Metal Roofing Right for a Residential Rental?

Metal roofing is quickly growing more popular with residential homes, for durability, yes, but also for style. In the last 10 years, we’ve seen metal roofing shift from the few commercial options it was known for to a material with dozens of available styles and colors.

You mentioned your property currently has asphalt shingles. If you like that look, have you considered substituting metal shingles? You get to keep with your familiar style, but still reap the benefits of metal’s durability and fire resistance.
