The shocking part? 36% replaced their siding solely to boost curb appeal, and 23% did because they just didn’t like their home’s look. Here’s a complete breakdown of the survey’s findings: 

After a decade in this business? The results come as no surprise here. Your siding makes up 70% of your home’s exterior. It’s the face of your home- the first impression for friends and neighbors. We all want to take pride in where we live, and that means loving how your home looks when you pull in from work!

But what do you do if you want to refresh your facade but you don’t have vinyl siding? Homeowners with brick homes, or mixed facades with a brick foundation, find opting for a total replacement isn’t just out of budget.

In season 1, episode 2 of HGTV’s “Fixer Upper: Welcome Home” Chip and Joanna Gaines are asked this same question. Homeowner John wants the couple to paint his historic home white and they reluctantly say they will.

But after a deep clean? 

Chip and Jo decide they just can’t paint the historic brick. It’s too beautiful! Once the homeowner sees the clean home, he also falls in love. Here’s a photo- what do you think?

But is painted brick always a bad choice? As far as aesthetic is concerned, it’s a decision you should be 100% confident in: Once you paint brick, there’s no going back. 

When homeowners come to us asking about painting their brick I recommend doing this first:

Powerwash your home’s brick exterior. Unlike vinyl siding, brick can safely be power washed. If your brick looks streaked, dirty, or worn, sometimes the solution is as simple as cleaning it. If after washing it you’ve fallen back in love with the historic look? No need to change it. 

Still craving that fresh white brick? Read on for tips to safely paint your brick. But first let’s take a look at how painting bricks can affect your brick’s lifespan.

“Does Painting Brick Cause Structural Damage?” 

There’s a fine line between updating your home and spending thousands on a trend that will date it in five years. If you’ve read about our 2022 siding trends, or our kitchen remodel trends, you know we always look at styles backed by history. 

Painted brick siding may seem like a new craze, but it’s been a stylistic choice since the 1870’s. Back then bricks weren’t as hard as they are now and often required a protective paint coating. From there, the style was born. 

But what was once done for added durability is now known to weaken the bricks.

The truth is painting modern brick- even if done correctly- will weaken the material. 

When a professional tackles the job, there is a lot of time sunk into preparation. We dry, prime, paint, and apply a protective coating. But even with these additional steps? There’s no way to guarantee moisture hasn’t been trapped in the layers at some point in the process. The best methods can only minimize the potential. 

Overtime, any amount of moisture will cause erosion. Working with a skilled contractor is the difference between eroded brick over decades instead of in the first ten years.

Future damage is the biggest downside to painted brick but it’s not the only drawback. Keep in mind that if you make the transition to painted brick: 

• You’ll need to repaint the bricks every 5-10 years
• Dirt and algae show easier on painted brick 
• And- here’s the real kicker- painted brick is not ideal in rainy climates (that’s us Schuylkill county homeowners!)

If you’re interested in painting your brick facade, don’t try and DIY. This is a decision best carried out by a professional.

In America- you’d think our answer would always be a big ol’ Texas-style “Yes!!”. 

Our bathroom sizes have more than doubled since the 1970’s. The size of new houses has increased by 150% since the 1980’s. And the size of our decks has increased so much we’re now seeing the construction of what they call “monster decks”. 

Yes, you read that right- monster decks. These decks are 3,000 square feet, or a whole 2,500 square feet larger than a standard deck. 

Here in Pennsylvania? I like to think we’re a little more on the practical side of things. 

And let’s face it- many homeowners just don’t have the space, or the budget, for a giant deck. 

For homeowners with a small yard, these stats are discouraging. Is there a way to enjoy the outdoors without building a deck the size of house…and having enough left over in the budget to buy hotdogs for the opening-day grill out?

Today, we’re going to talk about exactly that.

Ever been to a parking-lot carnival? Do you recall the mirrors in the fun house? Your face still looks like you, just elongated. 

Don’t worry, I’m not suggesting funhouse mirror installation on your tiny deck. But in the same way natural light and white paint make a space feel bigger inside your home, there are exterior deck tricks that also make your deck appear and feel bigger than it may be. 

One of the best tips to alter the size perception of your deck is a best-kept contractor tip: Install your deck boards diagonally instead of perpendicular! 

Your eyes follow the length of the deck panels. And since diagonal boards run further than perpendicular lines? It looks longer.

The light paint color trick doesn’t just work for your home’s interior, either. Choosing a lighter deck color creates the same effect. Light colored decks have other perks for us Pennsylvania homeowners, too:

• Lighter boards absorb less heat- perfect for bare feet on a hot summer day
• Pollen fall is less visible on lighter colored decks. So if you’re deck backs into a wooded area? Your kids won’t be so tempted to ‘draw’ in the pollen before you have a chance to hose it off. 

My last tip to make a small deck feel spacious? Choose low profile railings. Take a look at how these homeowners opted for cables instead of wood railing:

#2 Clear the Clutter for A Functional Family Deck!

“A place for everything and everything in its place.” 

This old adage is one of the wisest when it comes to organizing your small deck. Too much stuff- whether it be large furniture, deck toys, or accessories- makes a space feel cluttered. 

Cluttered spaces aren’t just an eyesore, either. Clutter overwhelms us and causes feelings of stress and anxiety. It signals to the brain that our work is never done. I don’t know about you, but that’s the last thing I want to be thinking about when we hang out with our kids on our porch.

Your deck is a space for rest and relaxation. With these three organization tips? You’ll never have to worry about clutter again. 

#1. Hide the mess. Secret cubbies are one of the best ways to minimize messes. When furniture shopping, opt for benches and ottomans that open up for storage space. 

#2. Hang it up. Hand-held garden equipment can be stored on a hanging rack. You can also install shelving and baskets to your vinyl siding. But before you grab your power tools and puncture your vinyl, read up on safe ways to attach decor and shelves to your siding. 

#3. Store it in the shed. If the lawn toys are holding your deck hostage, consider building a shed! A designated place for toys and mess keeps clutter off your deck, and tucked away in its place. #3 Use Simple Additions to Increase Space (and Comfort!) 

Here in Pennsylvania, summer days range anywhere from 75-95 degrees. But the NOAA is anticipating record breaking heat waves in 2022 as well as heavy rainfall. 

Some may argue a deck is the worst thing in this heat. But a small deck that’s thoughtfully designed to fit the weather can actually be a great way to comfortably enjoy the view- and not be stuck inside! 

So how do you break the heat and use your outdoor space? Ditch clunky box fans run by extension cords in favor of wall mounted fans, like this one: 

Another way to create a little oasis from the heat of summer? Add shade bushes and hanging plants to your garden store list! In addition to providing shade, hanging plants also add a lush, get-away feel to your little paradise.  

Some of the best plants for this are:

• Spartan juniper trees- They have a small footprint, and grow up instead of out.
• Pyracantha- This evergreen shrub creates a wall of privacy. 
• Clematis- The climbing vine fills in gaps along your railing and have the most gorgeous flowers.

Another great way to beat the heat- opt for composite boards over pressure-treated. These boards are built to resist heat. This is especially important if you have small children around who love to kick off their sandals. 

Last but not least, don’t forget about lighting! Outdoor lighting allows you to enjoy your deck far into the cool of the evening. 

For a small deck, I’d recommend either hanging lights or under rail lights: 

Hanging lights create a beautiful ambience and don’t take up extra floor space. When I think late nights spent together on the deck, this is what comes to mind. 

Under rail lights are another great option:

Just like hanging lights, under rail lights keep your deck lit in the evening without sacrificing space. Regardless of the style of lighting you chose, make sure to opt for something off the ground. This simple tip minimizes deck clutter and creates a space you’ll enjoy all summer long.

#4. Staycation Getaway With Partitions and Pergolas 

We all need a little summer break- but heading out for an island vacation isn’t always in the schedule. Good news: With a few updates? Your small deck can be just the place for peace and privacy.  

Let’s talk about a few ways to create a cozy (and private) deck. 

Wooden partitions are one of my favorite ways to give your deck a peaceful feel. I know this seems like the complete opposite of my advice to choose a low-profile railing, but if you’re looking for seclusion instead of openness? This is the way to go. 

When choosing a wooden partition, you can either match the wood to your deck boards, like this home:

Or contrast, like on this deck: 

Another thing to consider when shopping for wooden partitions: Do you want a permanent or semi-permanent fixture? Most partitions are designed to be folded up when not in use. But some are more fixed- like this one with planters installed at the base: 

My personal recommendation? If you have littles running around, choose a permanent fixture. Most wooden partitions are heavy but they take less force to knock over than you’d think. A fixed partition is the safest route to keeping curious climbers and reckless runners from disaster.

Last year, Amazon updated Alexa’s features to help those who are or plan to age in place. The update allows family members to monitor when the Alexa was activated for the day, and also enhances communication between caregivers and those aging in place. 

Besides working as an alert system, these devices are great for setting reminders and schedules. Having these types of systems in place can put your family at ease and keep the peace in your decision to stay at home. 

#3 Motion Detected Lighting: Besides being eco-friendly, this style of lighting is perfect for easy navigation. No need to worry about struggling to locate a light switch at night. Simply get up and the sensors will automatically light your way.

These systems offer safety and comfort to age in place. Technology is creating more options for people of all ages, and is a great upgrade.

My friend Kim just bought her first dishwasher. She moved here with her husband from Pittsburgh and, having rented most of their lives, they never had one. That is until buying their first home in Pottsville. 

Doing dishes by hand for the two of them wasn’t too much trouble…but now that they have a new baby? She tells me, “The dishwasher has gone from ‘nice to have’ to “MY FAVORITE thing in the house’!”

Gutters need to be cleaned out twice a year. Otherwise they can become clogged and clogged gutters don’t do their job keeping water away from your home’s exterior or foundation. Having a working gutter system is essential to protecting your home’s investment. 

While there’s no way to control leaves and debris from falling, gutter guards keep them from collecting in your gutters. 

So what is a gutter guard? 

It’s a protective barrier designed to block leaves and debris from your gutters while still letting water drain through.

Because the guard only allows water into your gutters it cuts down on clogs and regular cleaning. 

Although you’ll still need to check your gutters if you have guards, the guards reduce the frequency of cleaning substantially. 

By how much? 

Well, instead of twice a year, homeowners with gutter guards only need to clean their gutters every 2 to 3 years! 

Gutter Guards: How To Protect Your Home From Squirrels 

Another great thing about gutter guards? 

They work as extra protection against rodents and insects. 

The longer water sits in your gutters, the more attractive it becomes to bugs. A clogged gutter is the perfect place for mosquitoes to multiply- and that’s not something you want happening in your backyard!

The good news? Gutter guards increase water flow through filtration, creating an environment unsuitable for insect breeding. 

The guards also protect against birds and mice. These critters love to live in the roof of your home, squeezing behind the fascia boards to make a home in your attic. When you install gutter guards, they work as a physical barrier against this while protecting your fascia from rodent damage.

As far as gutter guards go, the three most popular guards are: 

• • Surface tension guards
  • Gutter sponges
  • Micro mesh

What’s the best choice for your home? Let’s take a look. 

The Best Large Debris Protection: Surface Tension Guards

Surface tension gutters guards (or “reverse curve” as they’re sometimes called) filter water out through a small slit in the guard. 

The water moves along the gutter guard, draining out through the narrow opening. The opening isn’t large enough for most debris. Instead, the water pressure forces the rain off the roof and through the drainage system.  

Here’s a breakdown of how that works: 

This system works very well if you have problems with large debris- like maple trees or oak trees. It’s also designed with durability against ice and heavy winds. Small debris can still filter through the gutter but is washed through the downspout.

The biggest set back to this guard? It’s not budget friendly and can only be installed on some roofs.

The guard is installed at an angle similar to the slope of your roof. It’s designed to slip under your roof and screw into the gutters. 

We only recommended this type of gutter guard on asphalt shingle roofs. It can damage the structure of other roofing types, but a skilled contractor will be able to tell you if a reverse curve gutter guard is a good fit for your home.

These guards are also one of the most expensive guards available. They’re not sold at most hardware stores and will need to be ordered through a contractor from the manufacturer. 

But there’s no doubt surface tension guards are the best option if your roof is a good fit for installation. 

The DIY Pick: Gutter Sponges

Gutter sponges are exactly what the name implies. They’re large pieces of sponge designed to fit in and conform to your gutters. 

The idea is that the water will absorb into the sponge, while debris builds up on top. Over time, the weight of the debris and the pressure in the gutters forces the water to squeeze out and drain. 

The biggest pro of gutter sponges? They’re budget friendly and a DIY installation. You can pick up this style of guard at most home improvement stores. 

It’s a quick fit but not a good long term solution. The sponge needs to be replaced every two years. The short lifespan makes them cost effective in the short term, but a pricey option long term. 

Other problems with sponge guards are: 

• • They don’t filter out small debris
  • Tend to mold and mildew (yuck!)
  • Can collect oils and tars as they runoff your roof- creating a fire hazard

In my opinion? This style of gutter guards does more harm than good. In our decades of replacing and repairing roofs in Schuylkill County, we’ve come across a few installations of these DIY gutter guards where they hadn’t been replaced often enough and cost the client in repairs that were completely avoidable. 

Is there a happy middle ground between high-end reverse curve guards and these disaster-prone gutter sponges? 

Absolutely! Here’s our top pick- micro mesh gutter guards.

Why We LOVE Micro Mesh Gutter Guards for our Pennsylvania Homeowners

This style of gutter guard is made up of two metal strips, used to attach the guard to your gutters or fascia. The mesh attaches between the strips, and sits over your gutters. The mesh can be made out of metal or plastic, but the best choice is stainless steel. 

With the finest holes for water, micro mesh offers the best protection from debris. Some models of micro mesh are designed to stop pollen from entering into your gutters. 

Micro mesh also offers protection from rodents. The guard is attaches in part to your fascia, and offers an extra layer of protection to the fascia and roof of your home. 

Plus- Stainless steel micro mesh can last up to 25 years! 

The extra protection isn’t the only upside to micro mesh. This guard is also: 

• • The easiest to clean 
  • Available for installation on most roof types
  • Protects against dangerous ice dams

Micro mesh is installed differently on every home. 

For some, the fascia boards are the best point for installation. On others, the guard is installed under the first row of shingles. 

An experienced contractor can assess the best way to install the guards…but don’t try to DIY this installation. With the right contractor by your side, micro mesh is the best protection for your gutters.

Imagine this:

It’s the 1850’s and you’ve just finished construction on your new home. 

Most of the houses in your town are made of wood. The material is everywhere, easy to access, and cheap.

But you? You opted for brick with your new home. Brick houses are more of an expensive but, since you can afford it, you want to build a home with an exterior that will withstand generations family use.

Fast forward a hundred years to the 1950’s. 

Your neighbors have just finished installing the newest housing upgrade- vinyl siding. 

A decade prior, the “big thing” was aluminum siding. But looking at the remaining aluminum houses…some oxidized by weather, others dented and scratched?

Home Exteriors: Always Changing.

The way we protect our homes is always changing.  As technology improves- so do we. The search for stronger, longer-lasting, and more affordable ways to protect our homes didn’t stop in the 1850s or the 1950s…and it won’t stop in 2021.

A few weeks ago, we talked about home facades and key differences between today’s most popular options. I got a few follow-up emails asking about cladding- and I’d like to explore that a little more. 

Cladding has been used in homes for centuries but this installation style has become popular again. Why? As it turns out, installing today’s best product with tried and true methods that have lasted centuries before really adds to the longevity of your home.

Cladding vs Siding: What’s the Difference? 

Siding and cladding are very different from each other…but not in the way you might think. In fact, just looking at a home, most homeowners wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between the two. 

Why?

The difference isn’t in the materials used. In fact, popular cladding materials include: 

• • Wood 
  • Fiber cement 
  • Stone or brick

So what makes siding and cladding different? The installation process. 

Traditional siding is attached directly to your home’s sheathing. 

Cladding is attached indirectly.

What do I mean? Let me explain.

Basically- there’s an extra gap. Instead of fastening to your house, a layer of furring strips is installed over a weather resistant barrier. Then, the cladding is attached to the furring strips. 

An intentional gap is left between the cladding and weather resistant barrier. 

Why? 

Even the strongest siding allows rain water inside. Most exterior materials are designed to dry out quick…but in Pennsylvania? Sometimes it’s a real race for any material to keep up between those heavy summer showers.

Cladding addresses the issue head on. Any rainwater that gets through the exterior will seep down through the gap like a gutter between the back of your exterior and your home’s walls. 

The weather resistant barrier protects your home against any additional moisture until everything drains or dries.  

Cladding Pros and Cons

Cladding is the most effective way to protect your home from water damage. 

But that’s not the only reason cladding is growing in popularity. The gap between your home and cladding creates an extra ventilation system. 

This gap creates something called the chimney effect. 

The result? Air trapped behind the cladding helps maintain a consistent interior temperature year round.

Remember learning that heat rises? That science comes into play here. During the summer, hot air filling the gap rises out, being replaced with cool air. This circulation keeps your home from overheating. In the winter the air isn’t hot enough to rise out. Instead it becomes trapped in the gap and helps regulate the temperature of your home. 

Cladding also: 

• • Increases home value and boosts curb appeal 
  • Comes in a variety of styles and colors
  • Is low maintenance

With all these benefits, you wonder why anyone would opt for a different installation process!

Well, here’s why: installing cladding takes a real pro.

What Can Go Wrong With Cladding?

The biggest downfall to cladding? The difficult installation process. 

When installed incorrectly, water becomes trapped in the gap. This sitting water wears at the weather resistant barrier and can lead to internal water damage, mold problems, and more. 

Different styles of cladding require different installation processes. Composite siding is very different from stone veneer. Both require a contractor who is skilled in installing the chosen materials AND knows how to work with the specific cladding installation process of that material. 

The big takeaway? If you want cladding, make sure your chosen contractor has a proven track record of installation and guarantees their work.
