I’m having a new roof installed! I’m so excited but I still need to choose a color. I was originally thinking of getting a dark gray shingle- but asking for ‘gray’ didn’t narrow down my choices!

Mary, you’re not the first homeowner to ask this question- and definitely not the last! After choosing the right installer, most homeowners breeze through choosing what quality of product they want for their home. But color choice? That’s the most difficult part for homeowners selecting a new roof. 

With current asphalt shingle supply? It’s only gotten trickier. I’m glad to hear you’re open to options. Right now? It’s best to have a few in mind when making a selection with any contractor!

In the garden, my tulips are breaking from the earth. I can’t wait to see the first flower of the season. I’m counting down the days for the warmer season and fighting the urge to start seeds too early inside. 

I know I’m not the only one ready for spring. Every day we talk to folks who want to know the best way to build more space in their homes for gardening. But in homes without yards? Or those who have yards that are just too rough to till a plot? People are turning to a new trend for space: rooftop gardens. 

Popularized by Pinterest and HGTV, rooftop gardens give homeowners more opportunities for green space. 

Who needs a yard when your roof works just as well, right? 

It’s a gorgeous style- but not without risks. Not every roof is a good fit for the weight- and water drainage- that comes with an elevated garden. 

Here’s what to think about before transforming your roof into the ultimate garden paradise.

Your Roof vs. Garden Weight 

Your Pinterest board is filled with flowers in blossom, red and orange heirloom tomatoes, and garden boxes all in a line. 

But those tips on transplanting seeds and the best soil to use doesn’t cover the most important step if you’re gardening up top…

So let’s talk about your roof’s structural support. 

A new flat roof can support 20lbs per square foot. 

Sounds like a lot, right? 

But when paired with snow weight, an HVAC unit, and that relaxing hammock? 

Soil for plants can become too heavy fast. 

We love DIYers- but there are some things you should never attempt without professional help. 

A rooftop garden is one of those projects. 

We’ve talked in the past about the danger of ice dams. If ice from typical winter weather can overload your roof and cause premature failure…imagine what loading it down with topsoil can do!

Are rooftop gardens possible? Absolutely. 

And weight isn’t the only thing to consider….

#1. Is your roof 10 years or older? With age, your roof loses structural integrity. Yes, most roofs last 20 years or longer- but after 10 years, a roof that wasn’t built with the added weight of a garden in mind won’t be able to hold one. 

#2. Do you have an asphalt roof? Planter boxes can leave indentations in the material, allowing water in and compromising your roof. Asphalt roofing just isn’t a good fit for rooftop gardens.

#3. What’s your roof’s slope? You can build a rooftop garden on a curved roof, but it’s tricky and requires more support.

If you pass these tests and are approved by a professional, congratulations! 

But most roofs aren’t qualified for rooftop gardening. Does that mean you can’t have one?

The good news? There’s still hope! It’ll just take extra steps…

Adding Structural Support

I can’t stress enough the importance of working with a professional when pursuing a rooftop garden. 

The added weight means strain on your existing roof, and can lead to water damage or collapse. 

If your roof isn’t strong enough, a professional may be able to add structural support by adding support beams and redistributing the weight.

You can also design your rooftop garden to weigh less by:

• Swapping bulky wood planter boxes for prefabricated fiberglass 
• Choosing shorter boxes- they require less soil. 
• Growing in lightweight soil 

Another thing to consider? An outdoor water source. You don’t want to haul buckets of water to the roof every day!

Also- you’ll also need to check your local ordinances for rail height requirements, rules on flammable materials, and other safety concerns. 

The truth is rooftop gardens are a LOT of work. 

Not sure your roof’s the right candidate for the project? Don’t worry- there’s other ways to incorporate green living without compromising your roof. 

Let’s take a look at three alternatives to a full rooftop garden. 

Carports for the Win!

Bigger isn’t always better- and this sentiment rings true with rooftop gardens. 

If your whole roof can’t bear the weight, ask your contractor about a carport rooftop garden! Carports are smaller structure, making it easier to add support. 

Plus, most carport roofs are flat and made of metal- making them the perfect spot for your planter boxes. 

I’m in love with the style! Just take a look at how much life this rooftop garden adds to the space:

Did you know an old carport can actually decrease your property value? But when altered with a rooftop garden, the value can increase up to 25%! 

Garage gardens are another great option. 

Most garage roofs are at level with the second story of your home. You’ll only need to install one exterior access point- instead of an entire rooftop entrance. 

Opting for a garage or carport rooftop garden? Don’t skip out on calling a contractor to check the structural integrity. Smaller surfaces are better candidates, but still need to be examined before moving ahead with the process.

A green roof is a waterproof membrane (usually made of rubber) installed on top of your existing roof. Once sealed from water damage, the membrane offers a safe way to grow plant life on your roof. 

Here’s a breakdown of what that looks like: 

One of my favorite things about green roofs? The membrane helps protect your roof from both water damage, and harsh temperatures. In some cases, green roofs have been known to double a roof’s life expectancy!

But the list of benefits goes on and on. The style is also known for: 

• Decreasing your utility bills through added ventilation
• Reducing outside noise
• Improving your home’s overall air quality 

How do you know if a green roof is right for your home?

Although green roofs weigh less than a rooftop garden, you’ll still need a professional to examine your roof’s structural support. 

The good news? Most green roofs only weigh thirteen pounds per square foot- seven pounds under the standard weight limit. 

The Perfect Window for Plant Life

Maybe you’ve decided putting plants on your roof just isn’t the best choice. 

That’s ok- but there are ways to add garden space to your home. Give your plant babies a space all their own with garden window inserts!

And while I might be dreaming of the warming days and green of spring- winter is still definitely here. 

Last week, winter Storm Landon dumped ice and snow across the middle of our country. Schuylkill County wasn’t impacted this round- our friends in Northwest Pennsylvania will take the brunt instead. 

But hazardous winter weather conditions always stress the importance of roofing.

When it comes to strength over your head, nothing stacks up like architectural shingles. As Vern’s covered before– architectural shingles are similar to their simpler 3-tab but with several stand-out differences. 

Today, we’ll take a look at the style, and why we love them for Pennsylvania homeowners!

Curb Appeal… On A  Budget

Landscapers, pest monitoring, and home maintenance tasks- the list goes on and on. Protecting your home is a top priority, and homeowners work tirelessly to care for their biggest investment. 

But when it comes to curb appeal? An often overlooked piece of the puzzle is right above your head. Just look up!

In fact, your roof accounts for 40% of your home’s exterior look. Your exterior is the first thing visiting neighbors and nosey neighbors see, and boosting your curb appeal is the best way to showcase your home.

Standard 3-tab asphalt shingles and architectural shingles are both made with adhesive and asphalt on a fiberglass backing. So what’s the difference? 

Dimension. 

Unlike flat 3-tab shingles, the contour of architectural shingles can be designed to replicate higher-end cedar shake or slate roofing- but at a lower cost. While architectural shingles are more expensive than their 3-tab counterparts, they still offer significant cost savings over the high-end products they mimic.

And curb appeal isn’t the only (or biggest) reason to make the switch. The biggest point in their favor? Durability. 

Long Live The Shingle 

Many homeowners go into the process of selecting a new roof looking to minimize the impact on their wallet. And if this describes you, it’s understandable. Budgets are a vital part of the consultation process.  

But is this really best practice? 

We’ve talked about how to choose a contractor in the past, and knowing your budget is the most important part of any conversation. But knowing your budget, and choosing materials based on ticket price alone can be a slippery slope. 

Saving money in the short term can mean replacing your roof sooner, especially in an area of the country where we see multiple types of weather. But more on that later. 

If you’re interested in leveling up your investment, architectural shingles are worth a look. Their increased durability means a longer life… which will save you money in the long run.  

Just how durable are they? 

The lifespan of architectural shingles is far above that of the standard 3-tab. When winter sends ice, sleet, and snow, the home covered in architectural shingles can withstand far more abuse. 

Even better? Architectural shingles come with a warranty to match their greater durability. A standard 3-tab roof usually only offers a 20-30 year warranty. But architectural shingles often include a warranty as long as 50 years!

Talk about protecting your wallet! 

Weather Every Storm

As the snowy days we are currently enjoying (or enduring!) fade into the blossoms of Spring, we can be sure of one thing here in Pennsylvania- thunderstorms are soon to follow. 

We live in what roofers consider a “mixed climate”. This means our roofs have to withstand both the stifling heat of summer as well as the icy cold of winter. 

Pennsylvanians see everything from hurricane force winds to blizzards during a given year. Even a run of the mill thunderstorm can result in damaging winds. Last September, Schuylkill County saw 75 mph downdraft winds causing damage so severe, some residents thought it was a possible tornado. 

The great news about these wild weather events? Architectural shingles are known for high wind resistance. And it’s not just wind, either. Architectural shingles are composited with a tough fiberglass mat sandwiched between two asphalt layers and then embedded with mineral granules on the top layer. Take a look at the difference between standard shingles vs architectural shingles below: 

The resulting product is impact resistant, and performs much better at hail testing than standard shingles. Which is good news for Pennsylvania homeowners! It’s not unusual to see hail over 1” in our state. 

A standard architectural shingle can resist wind speeds up to 120 mph.

2. “Don’t you want just one early present?” 
3. Gifts are saved for Christmas! No exceptions. 

At our house, Trina and Michael want to open presents faster than I can wrap them! But I’m in category “C”- all gifts wait under the tree until Christmas morning. 

The Christmases we spent celebrating while serving in Kenya weren’t as lavish as the states. Instead, we were grateful for time together celebrating our savior’s birth. I see gifts as an extension of that celebration and it’s why we wait to open our presents until Christmas morning. 

Besides, I love when everything comes together all at once. 

Sometimes waiting is better. And once the winter weather hits? Waiting might be something you should do, too, if you’re ready for a new asphalt roof. 

This may surprise you but we don’t schedule many asphalt roof installations in the winter. Why? Well, cold temperatures put our installation’s integrity- and our crew!- at risk. 

In this article, we’re going to talk about why you shouldn’t install an asphalt shingle roof in the coldest season of Pennsylvania.

Reasons Why Not To Install Your Roof In The Winter

Have you made gingerbread houses yet this year? Every year we do our best at cookie construction, thank goodness I have Vern on our “home construction crew”.

Count on Vern to build a solid gingerbread house. First, he warms the icing to the perfect temperature and density. If the thick layer of icing isn’t the right consistency and temperature, it just won’t hold. 

Although there’s a huge difference between gingerbread and real houses- in both applications adhesive makes a BIG difference!

Like gingerbread, asphalt shingles also need good sealant to protect your home for the long haul. This is why temperature matters so much! 

Your asphalt roof’s sealant is activated by heat and sunlight. When installed on cold days, it’s slow to activate. Improper adhesion leaves space for water and pests, both unwelcome “presents” on Christmas!

A slow curing sealant isn’t the only way a cold installation can fail your home. We also run into problems like: 

• Brittle and cold shingles are difficult to cut
• Cold air affects the nail gun pressure- making installation unreliable
• Edges of your shingles can curl up in the cold during a winter install 

The ideal temperature for an asphalt roof installation is above 40° F. Anything below this will affect the way your roof functions.

You’d be surprised how fast frostbite can set in. The National Weather Service shows some alarming statistics here. 

Ice also increases the likelihood of injuries from falls. In 2014, construction work related fatalities saw a 6% increase. The rise is attributed to slips and falls. 

Vern and I never want Martin to be the reason a family member doesn’t come home for Christmas. We want the best for our crew and the best for your home. 

Support starts at the top and it’s why we save our roof installations for the warmer months.

The average cost ($22k) is outside of your $15k bonus budget but when you factor in the 68% ROI, you’ll make an estimated $15,247 back when selling.

But let me say…the construction industry? It’s “unprecedented”! I’ve never seen so many homeowners calling us, stressed out from negative interactions with contractors.

Here’s what’s happening: 

In Pennsylvania, we have homeowners who

…now work from home- and want to invest in the place they’re spending their time.

…want to take advantage of the market and make a few updates before selling and downsizing (or upsizing) to their dream home. 

…realize they want a home where they can take care of extended family- or age in place- in the decades ahead. 

That means a lot of demand for contracting services. And, unfortunately, because we also have a shortage in skilled trade professionals, there just aren’t enough professionals to make it happen as fast as people like.

To make matters crazier, there are supply issues too. 

We’ve seen lumber, siding, roofing, and window prices skyrocket- at first when overseas manufacturers were shut down. Now, as more of us turn to materials made in the USA or Canada, it’s still both unpredictable and pricey.

Sadly, it’s true that some contractors are letting themselves slip into bad business practices. These contractors overpromise because they don’t want to turn down the money. They overextend their crew because they really do want to help you finish a project before the holidays…and then their crew quits. What The Best Homeowners Know Before They Call A Contractor:

No contractor expects you to know the ends and outs of your entire project before you call. But in my experience? The best projects always start with a foundation of solid information from you. 

Our team is experienced in every installation… but every project is different. We know construction- and you know what you want for your home. 

Any new project can seem overwhelming. Even something simple, like getting new vinyl siding, can lead to a million decisions. One of the hardest parts of replacing vinyl? Choosing the right color. Seriously- our siding provider Ply Gem offers hundreds of colors in every style to choose from. 

So with a new project, how do you bridge this communication gap? A few ways: 

#1. Know Your Budget!

This is the MOST important thing to walk into a conversation with. Many customers think that naming a budget will mean a contractor will automatically charge them the highest price possible. It’s not true! A professional contractor isn’t here to make you overspend- when we ask for a budget it’s because we want to help you find ways to fit within it. This could mean suggestions like opting for stone veneer over authentic stone, or choosing standard shingles over architectural style shingles. 

A great contractor is there to help. Know your budget, and don’t feel uncomfortable about being honest when they ask. 

#2. We LOVE Pinterest Boards.

In the age of technology, Pinterest is one of the best ways to communicate ideas. In every post, we include photos of the style discussed. Why? Over 60% of people are visual learners, your contractors included! 

Of course, you don’t need to use an app like Pinterest to help us out. Earmarked magazine photos, photos printed from the internet, or even just screenshots from our own project portfolios will help us “see” what you do and don’t like. 

Show us your reference pictures, and our in-house architect will make them a reality. 

#3. Know Your Expectations

Often, we ask how long you plan to live in your home after you install your new exterior. This helps us determine the best fit for your budget and your lifestyle. Moving in the next five to ten years? We recommend an asphalt roof for your time and budget. Making a lifetime home commitment? Metal is the better investment. 

Get Your Team On The Same Page

Communication is key to every relationship. 

And while this is true with your contractor, it’s most important with your spouse. Before calling in a contractor, make sure everyone is in agreement. 

Set your budget together and be upfront with expectations. That Pinterest board? Collaborate on it. 

We love and encourage you to ask questions. But no contractor wants to “take sides” while bidding your project. We’re not here to help you “convince” your significant other you need a certain style of roofing or an upgraded facade. We’re here to give you BOTH an honest assessment so you can make a decision together. 

When you call us for a bid, you should be in agreement on: 

• The scope of your project
• Your budget

Be open to change!

The grocery is picked clean as anxious homeowners stockpile essentials. 

Everyone is hunkered down at home watching the weather report. 

By the end of the day, an estimated 23.6 inches of snow had fallen. And it just kept coming. Snow was falling as fast as 3 inches per hour- and this was only the beginning!

The blizzard continued through March 15th. It cost a total of $5.5 billion in repairs, making it the most expensive winter storm to date. 

Though nothing beats the cost of ‘93’s blizzard…the snowfall record was broken three years later, in the blizzard of ‘96. During this storm, Pennsylvania saw a whopping 30.6 inches of snow!

Fast forward to 2021. In Schuylkill County, temperatures are starting to drop. This week, we’re seeing weather as cold as the 30’s. Next week, we’ll be down in the 20s.

Although we’re weeks away from a white Christmas, winter is making itself known. That means ice and snow are heading our way.

I can’t help but wonder how many homes would’ve been saved in ‘93 with the right prevention. During that blizzard, hundreds of families were displaced as homes were destroyed, and roofs collapsed. 

We’re lucky. After storms like 93’ and 96’, we know so much more about how to keep a residence safe from winter weather. But it starts with preparation…and that means thinking about it now. 

In previous articles, we’ve covered the best materials for home protection. Today, we’re going to look at the best roof styles to combat Pennsylvania’s weather. 

Let’s start by looking at the two best styles for winter protection. 

Gable Roofs: Defense Against Ice Dams

Think back to the little green roof pieces in your childhood Lincoln Log set. That triangle shaped base, resting atop your log house? The style is called a gable roof. 

When my daughter draws a house it always has a gable roof. What can we say? It’s a classic! In fact, this popular style has been around since the Roman empire!

There’s a good reason for it, too: Gable roofs are durable and versatile. A gable roof is just an architectural roof style. That means you can cover it with any material you’d like.  You can use any standard roofing material for a gabled roof- from America’s favorite asphalt shingles:

To your durable contender, the metal roof:

The gabled roof’s versatility isn’t even the most impressive reason this style has stayed for centuries. The real reason we love this roof is for its ventilation.

Let’s take a quick look at how it’s design specifically helps Pennsylvania homeowners. 

Gable roofs are installed with matching vents. These vents are located at both sides of the roof, installed under the roof’s eaves. 

Here’s what that looks like: 

Remember stack ventilation? Gable vents invented this ventilation system. Literally! 

The vents work almost like windows- one allowing cool air in, while the other pushes hot air out. This system regulates your attic temperature, lowering energy bills and protecting your roof from ice dams. 

With a regulated roof temperature, ice melts and drains properly instead of freezing over and creating a weight/leak risk. Pennsylvania homeowners can rest easy knowing their roof is protected against the biggest winter roof danger. 

Hip Roofs: Best Against High Winds

Next up in the gable family is the hip roof- also known as the box gable.

While a gable roof slopes down on two sides, a hip roof slopes on all four.

Here’s what this roof style looks like:

Which leaves you to ask- can you really improve on a classic? Why add more sides if gabled roofs have been keeping families safe for hundreds of years?

Here’s the answer: Hip roofs offer more durability in high winds. 

In 2007, the New Jersey Institute of Technology performed a study on the best roof for high winds. The research shows roofs with four or more slopes perform the best in high wind areas. 

Not only does this “new” and improved roof style offer all the benefits of the classic gable roof, it gives a home additional support in the worst weather conditions. Wind resistance and ice dam protection? Yes please! 

The only downside to this style is cost and loss of space. This roof requires more materials and is more complex to build, which increases both the material and labor costs.

You also lose out on attic space due to the sloping on each side. For some, this is a minor setback. But if you count on your attic for additional living space? A hip style roof isn’t the right choice for you. 

The good news? 

Standard gable or hip, when you work with our team, you’re promised a roof designed to last. Choosing the right style is a personal decision, but here at Martin, we’re here to help your home weather any storm?

Need More Space? Consider Dormers

On a side note: What if you already have a hip roof…and you’d like a little extra attic space? 

Consider adding a dormer during your next roofing upgrade! A dormer is a buildout from your roof. The name might not be familiar but odds are you’ve seen the style countless times without realizing it. 

Here’s what a dormer looks like on a standard gable roof: 

Notice the windows extending from the roof? Those are dormers! 

Each dormer can increase floor space by up to 250sqft. That means you can enjoy the benefits of a hip roof without compromising floorspace. 

It’s a great addition, but not every home is a candidate for them. 

The best way to determine if your home is the right fit for this upgrade is to have a skilled contractor take a look. An expert will: 

• • Check the architectural integrity of your existing roof. 
  • Determine the scale of your roof and if there’s room for a dormer.
  • Know what permits are necessary for the new build. 

In most cases, the best time to add a new dormer is when installing a new roof. If you’re making the switch to a gable or hip roof, make sure to ask your contractor about your dormer options. 

Come Wind or High Storm

The odds of us experiencing another blizzard like in ‘96 are low. 

But even without the 30 inches of snow? Pennsylvania winters are known for being harsh. There’s no way to predict what this winter will look like but you can prepare!

I have a new asphalt roof- replaced when I moved in four years ago (not by your crew- but you helped us out on a vinyl siding replacement so I thought I’d reach out). 

Last December I had problems with ice dams. With Christmas right around the corner, I don’t want to spend a lot of money on something new. Plus, my roof is almost brand new….it doesn’t seem right that this should be a problem at all.  

A friend of mine recommended deicing cables. What do you think? Easy solution or not worth the money?

John, that’s a great question. 

Ice dams can be a serious problem here in Schuylkill County. De-icing cables seem like a DIY option to give a roof an extra edge against our heavy snowfall. But do they really work…and at what cost?

First, let’s look at this question:

What is a de-icing cable? 

These cables were invented over 50 years ago to keep pipelines from freezing over in oil fields. Overtime, they moved from pipelines to roofs.

Today, they are used to regulate roof temperature. Their main purpose? To help homeowners like you get rid of or prevent ice dams. The cables run along your roof’s eaves, in the gutters, and downspouts like this:

The cables melt nearby ice, allowing water to flow through your gutters…that’s the idea, anyway. 

It might sound like an easy fix, but deicing cables are just a band-aid solution to a much bigger problem. They don’t solve the real issue and the “help” they give your roof now can come at a big cost to you as a homeowner. 

Before you head out to the hardware store and buy a few hundred feet of these cables to install, here are my three big issues with using de-icing cables to prevent ice dams:

Issue #1: History of Fire Damage

In recent years, improperly installed deicing cables have put these ‘solutions’ in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons.

In 1996, deicing cables caused a fire at the Philadelphia zoo. 

As of January 2000, deicing cables led to an estimated 2,000 fires and 100 related injuries. 

And in 2018, a fire caused by deicing cables completely destroyed a roof in Leavenworth, Washington.  

These accidents aren’t as common they once were- but the hazard is still there. Deicing cables are marketed as a DIY fix, but in reality? They should always be handled by a professional. 

Proper installation is key in fire prevention- but that’s not the only reason to hire a pro. 

When cables aren’t installed well, they can damage your roof- and causing leaks and early failure.

In short: don’t DIY a de-icing cable installation. 

If you’re trying to save money and protect your roof? De-icing cables might not be the best answer to begin with. Which leads me to my second issue…

Issue #2: They’re Cost Ineffective

John, you’re looking for a budget friendly solution to your ice dam problem. With deicing cables costing $1-$6 per square foot, they seem like a good fit, right?

Well- not exactly. 

De-icing cables don’t have a large initial investment but they can cost you in the long-run. 

A typical cable uses about 5 watts per foot to keep the ice from forming on your roof. This number stays the same, no matter the outdoor temperature. That means whether it’s 30 degrees or -10,  for every foot of cable, you’re using 5x that foot-length in energy.

So if you’re using a 100 foot cable (a small cable installation), it’ll cost an average of $14.40 a month to run your cables. If you use them 5 months out of the year, that’s an additional $72 – plus the upfront cost of the cables, installation, and any yearly repair/replacement needs.

The real issue here isn’t the extra cost on your electric bill. It’s this:

If ice dams are forming- you have a ventilation problem, 

Poor roof ventilation is costing you money and deicing cables only add to that expense. So…why not just address the real problem head on? 

That’s why my BIG problem with de-icing cables is this:

Issue #3: De-Icing Cables are A Band-Aid Solution to a Larger Roofing Problem

Ice dams can cause serious damage to the inside and the outside of your home (we cover ice dams in depth here). Here’s a quick refresh on why:

Ice dams happen when melting snow refreezes at the edge of your roof. This buildup keeps water from draining properly. Melted snow is pushed into your shingles- instead of draining- destroying your roof and leading to interior water damage. 

By melting the buildup by your gutters, de-icing cables are meant to help with good drainage.

The problem? 

Deicing cables only melt ice around where they’re placed. Ice dams may not form around your gutters and edge of your roof, but they can still happen on other parts of your roof. This means:

• • Extra weight on your roof 
  • Backed up water 
  • The risk of water damage to your home’s interior

In short, deicing cables are only a temporary- and incomplete- fix. 

So, what should you do instead?

Improper Ventilation and Your Winter Roof

You mentioned your roof was replaced within the last five years- and wonder why you’re still seeing ice dams. 

Ice dams aren’t necessarily caused by a bad roof installation. They usually happen when you don’t have the right level of ventilation in your attic. 

Good attic ventilation regulates your roof’s temperature- whatever the age of your roof. If your asphalt shingle roof isn’t all the same temperature, ice melts irregularly and you’ll have ice dams. 

Good news though- if your roof is solid, fixing your attic ventilation will put a stop to your ice dams…and the cost? It may be less than installing those de-icing cables to begin with. 

Some ventilation systems, like box vents, are an inexpensive way to increase ventilation in your attic. But again, you need a professional to take a look and make sure you aren’t just needlessly cutting holes in your roof.

Most people say that’s too early for Christmas- but Claire’s tradition has a genuinely sweet family origin. 

While pregnant with her first child, she was so certain her baby would be born right in the middle of December- leaving no room for decorating. In a third trimester panic (I remember those days!) she insisted her husband help her put up the Christmas decorations on November 1st.

When it comes to major home systems, like your roof, a little preparation can keep a roofing emergency from raining out your holiday plans. 

How To Prevent Emergency Winter Roof Repairs

In Pennsylvania your roof works overtime to protect your home. Schuylkill County is one of the wettest areas of the United States, which means your roof handles more summer storms and winter snowfall than your friends’ homes across the country.

How To Check Your Asphalt Shingles For Damage

Got that ladder out to string lights on your roof? It’s the perfect time to stop and check your shingles!

November to May is the windiest time here in Schuylkill County, with an average hourly speed of 6.6 mph. 

This might not seem like much. A standard asphalt roof can withstand winds as high as 90mph. But that consistent wind paired with stronger storm gusts can wear down your roof, especially if it’s older.

Here’s why wind can sabotage your roof’s integrity: Wind doesn’t hit your roof uniformly. Instead, it hits at different angles, picking away at loose or damaged shingles (your roof’s weakest points). 

6.6 mph wind wears down already damaged shingles fast. This wind speed is just enough to break off pieces of your asphalt shingle roof, exposing underlayment and creating leaks.  

So, as you’re hanging up those lights, go ahead and look for:

• Loose or missing shingles
• Bare spots in the asphalt granules
• Peeling or curling at edge of roof

If you’ve noticed any of these signs it’s time to call a professional. 

Loose shingles mean water damage, and lead to a chain reaction of problems in your home. When snow lands on your roof and begins to melt, the water doesn’t rest on the top of your shingles. It flows through the channels created by overlapping shingles.

But when your shingles are damaged? 

The melted ice and snow gets trapped in between. Overtime, the water works away at the sealant, destroying the rest of your shingles and the underlayment. 

Do you see missing or damaged shingles on your roof? Call us. Our crew is happy to stop by and give you an honest evaluation on if a quick repair will keep your roof strong for a few more years…or if it’s time to think about replacement.  

The Best Roof for High Winds

Remember how we said an asphalt roof can withstand 90mph winds? 

If your home is on a hill or exposed to larger areas of cleared land where the winds whip past, you might want to consider a stronger style of roofing material.

Your Winter Roof Inside Check: Attic Ventilation

You’ve hung the lights and now you’re pulling the rest of the decorations out of the attic. Now is the perfect time to perform your second winter roof check: Your attic ventilation. 

In August, we covered how attic ventilation keeps your house cool during the harsh summer months. And in winter? It uses those same properties to keep your home and attic warm. Here’s how it works:

A well-built attic should have two different types of vents: intake and exhaust vents. 

In summer, the hot air rises up through your exhaust vents and is filtered out. The intake vents allow fresh cool air in, regulating attic temperatures. 

Heat rises, working to your advantage in the hotter months. 

And the same process works in the winter! 

Most folks understand why you would want a cool attic in the summer, but did you know you also need a cool attic in the winter? That’s right! Your attic should only be about ten degrees warmer than outside temperatures, even in the coldest months! 

Why? 

A hot attic creates hot spots on your roof. These hot spots cause ice to melt irregularly, and refreeze on your roof’s edges. This is how your roof can build up dangerous ice dams. 

Signs of Ice Dams

Have you noticed icicles hanging from your roof in winter? They sure look beautiful, but they aren’t good for your home. Icicles are a warning sign that your attic isn’t venting air properly. 

Ice dams are one of the biggest winter dangers. They cause damage by: 

• Directing water into your shingles and causing unnecessary wear
• Allowing water into your attic
• Damaging you gutters and keeping them from shedding water

The best ways to avoid ice dams is by regularly cleaning your gutters and checking your attic ventilation. So while you’re up in your attic hauling down plastic tubs of garlands, pay attention to the temperature. How cold is it compared to outside?

If it feels cozy and warm in your unfinished attic, it’s time to get your ventilation checked out by a professional. 

A quick pro-tip: Run your attic fan in the winter. This will help regulate the temperature and protect against mold and mildew issues. 

A Smart Roofing Guide To Regular Maintenance

 

You’ve checked your shingles for wear and your attic feels like the perfect temperature. Congratulations! 

Regular maintenance is just as important as the big safety checks. Here are a few more things you can do to protect your home this winter:

• Seal gaps and cracks around your air vents with caulk or expanding foam. 
• The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends cleaning your chimney every 12 months for maximum protection. A professional chimney sweep will identify signs of leaks, and other potential problems.
• Trim those trees! Low hanging branches can become overloaded with snow and weigh on your roof.

For American’s it’s a new(er) movement. But many countries around the world have a culture of supporting elderly family members. How is multi-generational living normalized in other places? 

In India, newlyweds move in with the groom’s family to help and support them in the stages of life. The mother-in-law suite is America’s take on this.

We highly recommend against this due to the increased dangers in the case of a fire. Open floor plans leave less time for a fire to burn, creating larger and hotter fires. 

Instead, we recommend widening your pre-existing door frames. It’s a budget friendly and safe alternative! 

As far as interior changes go, your kitchen will require the most attention, second only to your bathroom. A skilled contractor will be able to retrofit your kitchen and lower counters and appliances for easier access.

Covid-19 has completely changed the way we do everything, including socializing.

Yes, you read that right. We joke about feeling old whenever we upgrade to a new phone, but the older you get the more you’ll actually want to embrace technology in your everyday life.

Amazon’s Alexa or a Google Home work great as alert systems. 

Last year, Amazon updated Alexa’s features to help those who are or plan to age in place. The update allows family members to monitor when the Alexa was activated for the day, and also enhances communication between caregivers and those aging in place. 

Besides working as an alert system, these devices are great for setting reminders and schedules. Having these types of systems in place can put your family at ease and keep the peace in your decision to stay at home. 

#3 Motion Detected Lighting: Besides being eco-friendly, this style of lighting is perfect for easy navigation. No need to worry about struggling to locate a light switch at night. Simply get up and the sensors will automatically light your way.

These systems offer safety and comfort to age in place. Technology is creating more options for people of all ages, and is a great upgrade.
